How do I pay?

Easy! As of August 1, 2024, the MBTA is offering an option for contactless Tap to Ride payment on bus, Green Line and Mattapan trolleys, and all gated subway stations. This means that there will be new Tap to Ride screens that enable you to pay by simply tapping your contactless debit/credit card, phone, or watch with a mobile wallet.

CharlieCards or CharlieTickets may still be used, (and must be used for weekly or monthly passes) but be sure to tap them on the old readers that you’ve always used, not on the new Tap to Ride screens. Cash on board is accepted on buses and street-level trolleys, however it will hold up the line. If using cash, try to use exact change.

What if you’re enrolled in a reduced fare program? You can still use your existing Reduced Fare CharlieCard (tapped on the old reader) but you can also choose to link your benefits to your contactless credit/debit card, phone, or watch. See more details.

Parking:

Where to Park: In Newton, there are small outdoor MBTA lots at Waban, Eliot and Chestnut Hill stations (no MBTA lots at Newton Highlands or Newton Center). Woodland Station has a parking garage with plenty of spaces – although may fill up for Red Sox games. Riverside has a large outdoor lot.

Price: As of 8/1/24, $6 weekdays at Woodland and Riverside ($9 at Eliot); all are $3 on weekends. Prices may change:  Find the parking fees for your station.

  • For parking you may pay electronically with the PaybyPhone system (download the app or call the PaybyPhone number posted at the station and follow the prompts). See more details. Monthly parking passes are available.
  • Don’t want to bother with an account? If you are not a regular commuter or would prefer not to use PayByPhone, an invoice notice will be mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner for every day the vehicle is found unpaid in the parking lot at the end of each month. The invoice will include a $1 surcharge for each day of unpaid parking in addition to the parking fee. Payments can be made online, by phone, or via mail.

Tip: Finding a weekday parking space at Waban, Eliot or Chestnut Hill can be tough after rush hour. Woodland has a large garage with good availability during the day, and Riverside has a big outdoor lot.
