Denise Garlick, Needham’s representative in the state legislature for the past 14 years, is not seeking re-election this November. Five candidates are vying to succeed her.

The four Democrats in the race will face off in a primary on September 3. (The fifth candidate is not a member of a political party; he will appear on the November ballot along with the winner of the Democratic primary.)

The League of Women Voters of Needham is hosting an in-person Candidates Night for the Democratic candidates next Wednesday, August 21, at 7:30pm, at Powers Hall, Needham Town Hall. The event will also be available on Zoom and will be broadcast live on the Needham Channel. You can submit questions or register for the Zoom event on the League website.

In its session that ended on July 31, the Massachusetts legislature failed to pass any climate legislation. The lawmakers abandoned important measures including bills to streamline the processes for siting and permitting clean energy projects, to reduce single-use plastics, and to update the state’s bottle bill.

Massachusetts has committed to be carbon neutral by 2050, and we cannot reach this critical milestone without aggressive action by the state legislature. The candidate who wins in November may represent us for many years. Let’s send a climate champion to Beacon Hill to represent the 13th Norfolk District!
