The GO GREEN Needham Expo on Saturday, November 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Needham Town is meant to help our community identify concrete steps we can take toward sustainability. To see a full list of participants, click here. Hope to see you there!
Hey kids – want a cool and easy way to get rid of vegetable scraps from the kitchen? (No, these are not the fresh vegetables from your dinner plate – you need to eat those – but the leaves, stems, and stalks that are trimmed off.) Then be sure to stop at Table 29, Make Your Own Worm Composting Farm, at the Expo so you can make your own home composter! You’ll build a cozy worm home, then add your worms (while our supply of worms lasts!) and some cut-up vegetables. Your worms will get to work doing their favorite thing — digesting the scraps and turning them into compost!
Once you get it home, put your composter in a cool, dry place that’s out of the way so it doesn’t get knocked over. But you need to remember to check on it at least once a week, and add more kitchen scraps as needed to keep the little guys healthy and happy.
When your composter is full of compost, and there’s no room for more scraps, you can put your compost out in your flower beds or vegetable garden to feed the plants. Then rebuild the nest, add back your worms and some scraps, and keep composting! If you decide to stop composting, be sure to wait until spring when it’s safe to set your worms free in a compost pile outside.
So, get to the Expo early – before we run out of worms!
