Several members of Green Needham’s Plastic Bag Elimination team, including team chair Rob Fernandez and Green Needham Chair Michael Greis, attended the Board of Selectmen’s October 24th, 2017 meeting to hear the Board’s initial discussion of plastic bag restrictions in Needham.

Green Needham has been working with the Chair and members of the board on approaches to eliminating single-use plastic bags in Needham. The Board had included exploring plastic bag use reduction in their list of goals, and this was their first discussion at a regular meeting.

We encourage you to both read Stefan Geller’s article online in this week’s Needham Times, and watch the discussion on the Needham Channel’s streaming service in the window on this page. Advance the player to 34:45 into the meeting where the discussion begins. It’s just under twenty minutes and worth watching in full.

There’s both good news and work to be done. As you’ll see, the Selectmen have met with the large stores to hear from them directly. They are open to working together with the town, and especially interested in hearing from residents, as are the Selectmen.

There’s interest in exploring different approaches and working with all the stakeholders. Green Needham Collaborative wouldn’t want it any other way. See our project page for more information.
