Many of us have farm shares from local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. There has also been support of Chestnut Farms, a local meat CSA. Now a local seafood CSA may be adding a Needham drop-off site.
From its inception in late 2008, and its first delivery in June 2009, the Cape Ann Fresh Catch (CAFC) Community Supported Fishery (CSF) has worked with local fishermen to deliver the freshest sustainable seafood available to greater Boston-area residents.
This arrangement benefits local fishermen, the environment, the local economy, and members. Local fishermen are helped by having new, more sustainable, markets for their product. Because the distance travelled and the corresponding carbon footprint is greatly reduced, the environment benefits. By keeping all costs community-based, the local economy prospers. And CAFC members get the freshest and highest quality seafood available.
It’s a win-win-win-win for local fishermen, the environment, the local economy, and CAFC members.
There are four share seasons, and members join the program by purchasing a share for a season. Each week during a season, at a designated delivery site, CAFC members pick up their seafood. Needham is being considered as an additional site, and Volante Farms would be the pick-up location. Eighty shares are needed to make the site viable. Interested? Send a message to: needham@capeannfreshcatch.org along with your e-mail address. CAFC will be in touch with updates on the viability of Needham as a site, and then sign-up information.
