Green Needham Collaborative’s ambitious tercentennial project – Needham 1,000 – has gotten a boost from a $400 grant awarded by the Wolfe & Rita Climate Action Projects Fund. The money will help fund a brass plaque which will honor local businesses which cut their energy use by at least 10%, as well as organizations, businesses, schools, and houses of worship which get at least 30% of their members or employees to take Green Needham’s 10% Energy Challenge.
Citing the “excellent nature of the overall campaign,” the Wolfe-Rita Fund chose Green Needham as one of their three grantees. The brass plaque is the centerpiece of the Needham 1,000 campaign, a project that aims to get 1,000 households to take the 10% Energy Challenge, an interactive online tool that enables users to make a personal plan to reduce their energy use. So far, 590 households have taken the Challenge, committing to energy-saving actions that would keep more than 4 ½ million pounds of CO2 out of the atmosphere each year.
