The Needham farmers market has gotten some interesting press in the last few weeks. It is good that people are discussing the pros and cons.
Personnally, I am a big supporter of local agriculture, and even if there is a farmers market, I plan to continue to walk to Volante Farm several times a week for fresh food. Needham is big enough to support two local food outlets, especially since one would only be open once a week for a few hours. I believe it will encourage people to seek out local foods, and will broaden the market rather than hurt sales for the Volante family. But even more important than the profits of one beloved business, is the opportunity for building community in our town. Most people work elsewhere, and unless you are standing on the sidelines of one of your children’s sporting events, there is almost no opportunity in Needham to meet your neighbors. Having a market each week, with delicious foods, free music performances, and informational tables for non-profits can go a long way to get people talking. And talking is how creative new ideas for community initiatives are hatched.
Another important benefit is that a farmers market would create an opportunity for parents and teachers to educate children about a healthy diet and a healthy planet. Demonstrating that the Town is committed to these important issues every week at the market would make a real difference in the lives of Needham residents.
Needham is a great place to raise a family. Let’s make it a great place to share information, discuss issues, and socialize with neighbors. A farmers market is just the thing to get that started.
