The Needham Community Farm hosted a 350.org “International Work Party” last week which was co-sponsored by the Green Needham Collaborative and First Parish Church. “Work party” volunteers helped winterize the NCF pilot gardens by layering newspapers and hay over the vegetable beds. The group had lots of fun working and enjoyed snacking on apples generously donated by Volante Farms.
350.org, which is an organization initiated by acclaimed environmentalist Bill McKibben, is encouraging climate action work days around the world on and around the date of 10/10/10. The idea of these events is to draw attention to the number 350, which represents 350 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere – the level many scientists believe we must get back to in order to sustain life on Earth as we know it. Needham’s event will be one of 4,174 events in 171 countries.
According to the 350.org website, on 10/10/10, 7347 events in 188 countries were held to bring awareness to the climate crisis.
